Dipyrone (Metamizole sodium) is a non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug commonly used in many countries as an analgesic and an antipyretic. Dipyrone was first synthesized by the German company Hoechst AG in 1920. Dipyrone was freely available until the 1970s, when reports surfaced that this drug may cause agranulocytosis, a potentially fatal disease. Dipyrone’s use to this may remains controversial and it is banned in some countries.
