Histone H3 is one of the core components of the nucleosome, the basic building block of chromatin. Methylation of histone H3 at lysine 9 is linked to a number of specific processes including transcriptional repression and the establishment of heterochromatic domains in the genome. H3 lysine 9 methylation is also appears to play a role the epigenetic silencing of tumor suppressor genes in several types of cancer.
