Description
HNF-3a (Hepatocyte nuclear factor 3 alpha, forkhead box A1, FoxA1) is a homeodomain containing transcription factor and is a member of the Hepatocyte Nuclear Factor family (HNF-1a, HNF-1b, HNF-3a, HNF-3b, HNF-3γ, HNF-4a, HNF-4γ, HNF-6a and HNF-6b), whose members regulate the transcription of numerous hepatocyte genes in adult liver. HNF-3 members bind to DNA as monomers using a winged helix DNA-binding domain. HNF-3a and HNF-3γ have also been shown to be involved in events such as gastrulation and body axis formation. HNF-3a modulates transcriptional activity of the estrogen receptor and is involved in the development of multiple endoderm-derived organ systems such as liver, pancreas, lung and prostate.
