Description
HP1 alpha is the mammalian homologue of Drosophila HP1a (Heterochromatin Protein 1a). HP1 contains a chromodomain that specifically binds histone H3 trimethylated at lysine 9, and thus localizes preferentially to regions of condensed and inactive heterochromatin. HP1 also contains a C-terminal chromoshadow domain that mediates dimerization. HP1 alpha is involved in the formation of heterochromatin and the silencing of transcription.
