Description
Launched in 1955, meprobamate was the first blockbuster psychotropic drug in America. Its popularity spread from patients to Hollywood, but the clinical use declined due the drug being deemed a sedative and not a tranquilizer, and also due to its addictive potential at doses not much higher than the recommended dose. The advent of highly effective benzodiazepines and other drugs have all but rendered meprobamate obsolete.
