Description
Developed in Germany in 1937 and marked in the U.S. in 1947 by Eli Lilly, methadone is still in use today. Methadone is structurally different than morphine and heroin but binds to opioid receptors and eilicits similar effects. Methadone is used to manage chronic pain as well as to treat opioid dependence.
