Description
Neomycin, an aminoglycoside antibiotic produced in Streptomyces fradiae, is found in many topical medications such as creams, ointments, and eyedrops. Neomycin is not absorbed in the gastrointestinal tract and for this reason is useful in killing intestinal bacteria prior to GI surgery. Neomycin has excellent activity against Gram-negative bacteria and partial activity against Gram-positive bacteria.
