Description
Rad21 is a component of the cohesin complex, involved in chromosome cohesion during cell cycle, in DNA double-strand break repair, and in apoptosis. The cohesin complex is required for the cohesion of sister chromatids after DNA replication. Rad21 is generally associated with chromatin over all of the chromosomes prior to prophase, at which point it becomes phosphorylated (by Polo-like Kinase) and is then limited to the centromeres. Rad21 is cleaved by separase/ESPL1 at the onset of anaphase, allowing chromosome separation. It is also cleaved by caspase-3 and caspase-7 at the beginning of apoptosis, at which point the C-terminus translocates to the cytoplasm and is possibly involved in initiating subsequent apoptotic events.
