The TAL-1 (T-cell acute lymphocytic leukemia 1, BHLHA17, SCL, TCL5) gene encodes a protein that is implicated in the genesis of hemopoietic malignancies. It may play an important role in hemopoietic differentiation and serves as a positive regulator of erythroid differentiation. TAL-1 is a member of the helix-loop-helix family of transcription factors. Overexpression of TAL-1 is the most common molecular abnormality found in human T cell leukemia.
