Illumina, a company working to improve human health by unlocking the power of the genome, is hosting 150 children from local schools to learn about genomics and participate in hands-on experiences such as extracting DNA from strawberries in honor of DNA Day. This day commemorates the successful completion of the Human Genome Project in 2003 and the discovery of DNA's double helix by James Watson and Francis Crick in 1953. This annual celebration offers students, teachers, and the public opportunities to learn about the latest advances in genomic research and promote awareness of how genomics can positively impact people and the planet.

Illumina’s focus on innovation has established it as a global leader in DNA sequencing and array-based technologies, serving customers in the research, clinical, and applied markets. In honour of DNA Day on Thursday, April 25, 2024, Illumina is hosting a global genomic literacy initiative called The Future is Bright. This event is part of Illumina’s commitment to supporting equitable access to science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM) education and inspiring the next generation of scientists.

Throughout the day there will be opportunities for students to engage with HRH Princess Royal and tour one of Illumina’s UK laboratories. Through partnering with local nonprofit organizations Form The Future and Cambridge Science Centre, Illumina is helping to enable equitable opportunities for the next generation, empower the community and provide local impact.

Each year, in celebration of DNA Day, Illumina partners with schools and nonprofit partners over the month of April to provide educational programs and activities for all grade levels. In 2023, over 100,000 learners participated across 130 global events and included over 1500 employee volunteer hours. Illumina aims to inspire learners to envision themselves as future leaders in STEM and at Illumina.

Mark Robinson, VP and GM, UK and Ireland, Illumina says, “We were delighted to welcome Her Royal Highness, The Princess Royal, along with local school children to learn about genomics at our headquarters in Cambridgeshire for DNA Day to recognize the importance of genomics and how it can positively impact people’s lives. Driven by advancements in DNA sequencing, genomics enables the prediction, diagnosis, and treatment of diseases with unparalleled precision and personalization, supporting better health outcomes.”
