Genedata provides Data Management and Analysis Platform for Systems Biology Initiative FRISYS

9 Jul 2007

On July 10th, 2007, Swiss-based computational biology provider Genedata AG announced its collaboration with FRISYS, the Freiburg Initiative for Systems Biology recently founded under the umbrella of the Centre for Systems Biology (ZBSA) in Freiburg, Germany.

FRISYS focuses on modelling and systems analysis of signalling processes in growth and differentiation: in human cells; in model photosynthetic organisms such as cyanobacteria, the moss Physcomitrella patens and the plant Arabidopsis thaliana; and in the animal models zebrafish and Caenorhabditis elegans, a roundworm. FRISYS is one of four FORSYS (Forschungseinheiten der Systembiologie) Systems Biology Centers funded by the German Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF).

Both the experimental and theoretical FRISYS research groups can rely on a tailor-made central data management and analysis platform provided by Genedata. Based on Genedata`s proven Phylosopher and Expressionist solutions, the customized system specifically addresses pathway modelling applications and is capable of analyzing large volumes of data, to investigate signalling and regulatory pathway wiring schemes in the various model organisms.

“Scientists from developmental biology and plant sciences as well as from the medical field are joining forces for our systems biology projects. Therefore, establishing a data management and analysis solution that can accommodate a wide range of needs was a prerequisite for FRISYS. Genedata provides us with a scalable, flexible and central platform that allows our scientists to store and exchange data sets and research results. In addition, they can effectively communicate findings from emerging fields such as transcriptional cascades, phospho-proteomics and small non-coding RNAs and simulation,” explains FRISYS spokesman Prof. Dr. Wolfgang R. Hess.

"Our collaboration with FRISYS is yet another step in further expanding Genedata’s position in the Systems Biology domain. Systems Biology has matured over the last few years and is increasingly being adopted by industries such as pharma, agro, biotechnology, and nutrition,” says Dr. Othmar Pfannes, CEO of Genedata AG. “We are delighted to support such an outstanding initiative as FRISYS with our computational solutions.”
