Wastewater is a challenging matrix for extraction with a liquid/liquid approach. Solid phase extraction (SPE) eliminates emulsions and can result in a smaller extract, saving evaporation time and solvent emissions.
The US EPA is moving towards adding SPE to wastewater methodology, increasing the suite of methods that already incorporate modern SPE technology for drinking water, surface water and groundwater. For a more detailed description of US EPA method 625 for semi-volatiles in wastewater, hear the webcast of the recently presented paper on this topic. Solid phase extraction gave excellent recoveries and precision for both 100-mL and 1000-mL synthetic wastewater samples.
