ISO specified Listeria medium from Lab M

9 Feb 2006

UK media specialist, Lab M, has extended its Harlequin range of chromogenic isolation and identification media with the launch of Listeria Chromogenic Agar (Agosti & Ottaviani formulation) – product code HAL 010.

Importantly, HAL 010 is the first dehydrated Listeria medium as specified by ISO 11290. It can be used as the primary isolation medium for L.monocytogenes in foodstuffs and related materials.

Extensive international validation studies have confirmed the new product to be both sensitive and specific - with a 34% increase in positive isolations over traditional media.

Chromogenic media utilise state-of-the-art detection and identification systems. Harlequin Listeria incorporates a novel chromogen that results in the formation of an intense pigment that is retained within the colonies. L.monocytogenes is distinguished from other Listeria species by the development of a precipitate halo around the colonies. Presumptive identification is straightforward, reducing the need for subculture and confirmatory testing.
