Low Cost Ion Chromatography Method to Determine Bromate in Drinking Waters using EPA Method 326.0 that Achieves Part Per Trillion Sensitivity
23 Jan 2006The United Kingdom has some of the toughest standards for the quality of drinking water in the world and the current requirement is to be able to quantify bromate in drinking water supplies to below 10µg l-1 and demonstrate an analytical sensitivity of 1µg l-1 bromate.
Bromate ions are formed as a by product of bromide oxidation in the water disinfection process and must be quantified and controlled due to their potentially carcinogenic nature.
The analysis of bromate in drinking water supplies can be reliably and accurately measured using the 844 Compact UV/VIS Ion Chromatograph (IC) from Metrohm, according to the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) Method 326.0 down to at least 500 ng l-1, with only a modest initial instrument outlay backed by the guarantee of future low running costs.
All the components are located in a single housing with a minimal footprint and can be controlled using the optional IC Cap interface for operation by semi skilled users, ideal when the instrument is located in a plant environment. The powerful IC Net 2.3 data acquisition and controlling software comes as standard and the Autodatabase software allows archiving and searching of all the analytical data generated.
Modern analytical organizations today demand more from their instrument suppliers than simply being the perceived Market Leader, with Metrohm you get superior instruments, ease of use and unrivalled customer support that still bears the hallmarks of the ethos established sixty years ago in Switzerland.
As the pioneer of (Metrohm) Inline Sample Preparation (MISP) back in 1997, Metrohm realized that many users do not want to have to do perform lengthy manual sample pre-treatment steps in order that a sample can be introduced into the IC. With Metrohm, autosamplers are available that for example, can filter or dilute (or both) the sample inline to save the analyst time and money with minimal human interaction, simply ‘place and go’. MISP technology is readily utilised when handling dirty water samples.
New for 2006 and of benefit to all IC instruments, is the 845 Eluent Synthesizer which can be used to generate all manner of certifiable eluents, standards and other reagents using Valid IC™ from Metrohm. The solutions can be organic, inorganic, ionic or non ionic, aqueous or non aqueous and virtually anything required by the application can be generated at the ‘touch of a button’ with full GLP compliance. There is also the option of automatic pH adjustment if required and the 845 Eluent Synthesizer reduces the labor and time costs associated with producing the mobile phase and post column reagent required by EPA Method 326.0. The proven Dosino™ liquid handling technology ensures unrivalled batch to batch reproducibility.
