MEDICA 2007 – More Efficiency in Medical Applications with Products

14 Nov 2007

Leica Microsystems’ user base is growing all the time, ranging from research scientists, surgeons, pathologists and doctors to lab assistants. With innovative products and system solutions for the most diverse medical applications from sample preparation through microscope diagnostics all the way to image documentation, the leading manufacturer for precision optics technology offers an extensive product portfolio. The products that are being presented to MEDICA visitors this year will make the daily workload even easier and even more efficient.

Limits of stereomicroscopy redefined with FusionOptic™
The new Leica M205 C breaks through the previous optical resolution limits of stereomicroscopy by incorporating Leica’s new FusionOptic™ technology (patent pending) which takes advantage of a neurological phenomenon. The left beam path produces great depth of field, while the right beam path provides a high-resolution image. The human brain then combines the best information from both channels to compose an image whose resolution and depth of field have never been achieved in any stereomicroscope before. The Leica M205 C is the world's first stereomicroscope with a fully apochromatically corrected 20.5:1 zoom. In the zoom range from 0.78x to 16x, the resolution increases continuously up to 1050 lp/mm (planapochromat objective 2x). Due to the natural laws of optics, this performance class has never been seen before in stereomicroscopes.

More ergonomy and mobility in microsurgery
The high-end surgical microscope Leica M525 OH4 offers 36% more reach than comparable instruments. Another remarkable feature is its precise, harmoniously balanced yet easy movement. The combination of Leica OptiChrome™ optics, 300 watt xenon illumination and fully automatic lamp changer ensures high-contrast images with great field depth. The AutoIris™ feature prevents overheating of the tissue outside the field of view. The Leica BrightCare™ feature automatically regulates the light to the optimum intensity. The combination of the Leica M525 microscope and the compact stand F40 is particularly suitable for ENT and spine specialists, offering an excellent view, easy maneuverability, optimal stability and a convincing price-performance ratio.

Innovative network solutions for pathologists
With the Leica DMD108, Leica Microsystems is breaking new ground in digital microscopy. For the first time, this innovative network solution for pathologists integrates microscope, camera, and PC in one compact system for excellent diagnostic image quality and convenient documentation, presentation and data exchange facilities. The new Leica DMD108 combines the benefits of digital imaging with manual sample navigation to significantly speed the pathologist’s daily work routine. The Leica DMD108 links the user with colleagues in the institute and experts around the globe. An additional monitor or a highresolution beamer can be connected for training and discussion purposes. Images can also be directly emailed to consult colleagues that are not linked to the network.

Universal microscope for living cell examinations
The new inverted microscope generation Leica DMI3000 B is especially designed for applications in live cell research, offering a unique level of technology and convenience for this class of microscope. The new integrated incident light fluorescence axis delivers brilliant images for all manual fluorescence techniques. Leica’s integrated modulation and phase contrast solutions eliminate the need for special objectives. On top of this, the system offers extremely flexible configuration options. The addition of manual fluorescence turns the Leica DMI3000 B into a general-purpose microscope for live cell examinations – and offers the perfect start to research microscopy.

Microscopy easier than ever before
Research results captured as excellent images – this is now even easier to achieve with the new generation of Leica DM4000 B to DM6000 B digital microscopes. The brilliance and speed of the integrated imaging system are unparalleled in this class of microscope. Intelligent automation and the most up-to-date control electronics guarantee reproducible results that are absolutely reliable. The new external Leica STP6000 SmartTouch Panel enables completely new operating freedom with its ultra convenient, intuitive remote control of all automated functions. Complex processes can be automated according to individual specifications. Unique features are the change in contrast at the push of a button for all the instruments in the series, and the fully automated Differential Interference Contrast (DIC) on the Leica DM5000 B to DM6000 B.

New milling system for pharmaceutical research
In the development new medications, the distribution of active ingredients within a tablet plays an important role in their effectiveness. With the new Leica EM RAPID milling system, tablets can be prepared for quantitative NIR (near-infrared) spectroscopy quickly and with maximum precision. Highperformance tungsten carbide or diamond milling tools decapsulate and mill without smearing effects from the outer capsule layer. The milling speed can be continuously adjusted, and to analyze active ingredients in various layers of the medication, the specimen can be milled in defined increments of 0.5 to 100μm at any inclination angle. The instrument automatically performs sequential trimming of uniformly thick layers using the auto-feed function – there is no need to operate the hand wheel. The optimized stability of the instrument prevents vibration and ensures ideal surface quality.
