Pasteurization using a laboratory grade washer

21 Aug 2024

Pasteurization is a thermal treatment applied to foods to destroy micro-organisms and pathogens. It reduces possible diseases by consumption and increase food shelf life. In the food and beverage industry, tunnel washers or immersion baths are often used to pasteurize bottles of beverages in a production line.

Miele solution

The Miele PG 8583 undercounter labwasher, with two level loading, simulates tunnel washer conditions by spraying bottles with water at a certain temperature. With the PG 8583, temperatures can be controlled and raised step-by-step at a specific holding time until the pasteurization point is reached, and then lowered to cool the bottles.

Consistent, critically clean results

Using the programmability function of the PG 8583, the incoming tap water can be mixed from the hot and cold taps so the system can circulate ambient temperature water for a few minutes. This eliminates a direct cold spray which would shock the bottles and eliminates breakage.

Miele Professional has successfully tested different basket and insert set ups and specific program parameters for specific pasteurization application. This temperature change can be customized for a particular liquid and flavor, food, container type and volume according to end use needs.

Time management and cost savings

Purchasing a laboratory glassware washer is a sizeable capital expenditure but the long-term return on investment should be analyzed beyond the initial cost of the equipment. As a repeatable process, an automated washer will deliver a consistent clean everyday.

Sustainability

A sustainable laboratory washer, can further add water and energy cost savings while also gain a greener laboratory. With Miele’s patented heater integrated variable-speed pump, the spray arm pressure can be adjusted accordingly during different stages of the wash program: highest rate during the main wash and slowest during rinsing. This results in less water and energy usage, better cleaning, and longer plastic/glassware life.

Miele’s sustainability initiatives have been audited, and products such as the PG8583 LD lab washer amongst others, bear the ACT® Label certified by My Green Lab®.
