Scientists’ Choice Awards: Innovative clinical diagnostics technologies recognized at ADLM 2023

The best new clinical diagnostics instruments and kits, chosen by healthcare professionals

The world’s most pioneering and effective clinical diagnostics technologies have been recognized during a special ceremony at the 2023 AACC Annual Scientific Meeting & Clinical Lab Expo. Winners of the Scientists’ Choice Awards® were announced live by SelectScience CEO, Kerry Parker, and Senior Associate Editor, Sonia Nicholas.

Each year, we invite clinical scientists and clinicians from around the globe to participate in the Scientists’ Choice Awards by nominating, reviewing, and voting for the lab products that have had the greatest impact on their work. Read on to discover this year’s winners.

Best New Clinical Instrumentation of 2022

The award for Best New Clinical Instrumentation of 2022 goes to the Yumizen H500 from HORIBA Medical.

The Yumizen H500 is a compact benchtop hematology analyzer with enhanced performance, new features, and increased benefits. The instrument is designed for small labs and is suitable for a variety of clinical lab environments and settings.

The award for Best New Clinical Assay/Kit of 2022 goes to the Applied Biosystems™ TaqPath™ Respiratory Viral Select Panel from Thermo Fisher Scientific.

The Applied Biosystems TaqPath Respiratory Viral Select Panel is a multiplex, real-time PCR (qPCR) in vitro diagnostic (IVD) test designed for identifying five common respiratory viruses in under three hours.

This year’s coveted Reviewers’ Choice Award for Clinical Company of the Year goes to NanoEntek, in acknowledgment of the consistently positive feedback it has received from clinical scientists sharing their opinions via reviews on the SelectScience website over the past year.

Reviewers' Choice: Clinical Customer Service of the Year

Clinical Video Interview of the Year – in association with The Scientists’ Channel

This year’s winning video ‘Accelerated hematological testing for improved patient care’ is an interview with Gary Tye, senior biomedical scientist at Blackpool Victoria Hospital.

In the winning video, produced in association with ELITechGroup, Tye highlights the integral role of reliable slide staining and centrifugation technology in enabling the production of blood films, bone marrows, and cytospins in a standardized fashion.

Clinical Webinar of the Year

This year’s Webinar of the Year is awarded to Siemens Healthineers. The webinar, titled ‘Understanding the complexity of urinary tract infections and the role of urinalysis in early detection‘, available to watch on demand, provides a comprehensive overview of urinary tract infections (UTIs), including a description of the causative pathogens associated with UTIs and how they manifest. The webinar featured talks from Dr. Jeffrey Henderson, Washington University School of Medicine, and Lisa Ritenour, University of Akron, on the complexity of UTIs from the routine to the more unique and complicated cases.

Clinical Summit Presentation of the Year

The winner of the Summit Presentation of the Year goes to ‘A Critical Update on the New ISO 15189:2022 Edition’, produced in collaboration with LGC Clinical Diagnostics and available to watch on demand. In the presentation, Prof. Dr. Folker Spitzenberger, Group Leader Clinical & Regulatory Affairs, Centre for Regulatory Affairs in Biomedical Sciences - CRABS, Technische Hochschule Lübeck University of Applied Sciences, discusses the latest revisions to ISO 15189 and the rationale for the updates.

Clinical Editorial Article of the Year

This year’s winning article is titled ‘A revolution in diagnostics – The race for five-minute point-of-care PCR testing’ and features technology from LGC Biosearch Technologies.

In this interview, Andrew Anyakwo, Head of Reagent Development at LEX Diagnostics, discusses how LEX Diagnostics is working with LGC Biosearch Technologies to precipitate a step-change in PCR usability and speed.

Clinical Innovative Content of the Year

The Clinical Innovative Content of the Year Award goes to Waters Corporation for ‘Exploring the value of liquid chromatography tandem mass spectrometry in the clinical lab’. This interactive resource takes a closer look at how LC-MS/MS instrumentation has advanced to support the increased uptake of the technique in clinical labs, shaping the market with IVD labeled instruments and reagent sets.

Clinical Email of the Year

The winner in the Email of the Year category goes to ‘Introducing the new Atellica Hematology Portfolio’, from Siemens Healthineers. The winning email featured a video showcasing the Atellica® Hematology Portfolio, the latest solutions in the companies more than 60-year history in hematology testing.

Clinical Reviewer of the Year

The Clinical Reviewer of the Year award goes to Lynn Cunningham, Point of Care Coordinator at Adena Health System, for sharing insightful reviews on the clinical laboratory products that have had an impact on her work.

Seal of Quality

The Seals recognize the top 0.1% of products that consistently receive the highest customer review ratings on SelectScience® and are designed to help scientists and healthcare professionals worldwide immediately recognize the instruments and services their peers rate the highest.

The latest product to earn a prized Seal of Quality in recognition of outstanding feedback from scientists globally is the NucleoCounter® Family of Cell Counters and Analyzers from ChemoMetec. The cell counting platforms have earned a Bronze Seal of Quality award having received 65 reviews, with a respectable average star rating of 4.8 out of a possible 5.

Commenting on the NucleoCounter® NC-200™ automated cell counter, Lea Svendsen from IO Biotech said, "Super easy to use! Very fast and efficient in use. Very reliable and extremely handy to have in your cell laboratory." This is the first Seal of Quality to be awarded to ChemoMetec.
