Shimadzu’s Shim-pack XR Series Columns Provide Quick, High-resolution HPLC Analysis

19 Jun 2007

The new Shim-pack XR Series of high performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) columns from Shimadzu Scientific Instruments Inc. (SSI) delivers high-speed HPLC analysis with a new generation of columns that balance the need for increased separation efficiency with the ability to maintain reasonable system back pressures.

Scientists can use Shim-pack XR columns for a variety of applications ranging from liquid chromatography/mass spectrometry front ends requiring high throughput to high-resolution analyses requiring reliable separation of complex substances. When used in combination with SSI’s Prominence® HPLC/UFLC, Shim-pack XR columns enable never before achieved speeds and improved sample processing performance. They enable high-speed gradient analysis with cycle times under one minute, which increases laboratory efficiency.

Shim-pack XR columns employ 2.2 µm particle size, which maintains the resolution performance of a general purpose column (5µm, 4.6 mm x 150 mm) while greatly shortening analysis time. Under most analytical conditions, the column pressures remain less than 30 MPa, so they can be utilized with existing HPLC instruments without the need for special high-pressure equipment. The Series can improve resolution by allowing the use of a longer column, thus more theoretical plates, than other columns on the market with smaller particles, due to the 2.2 µm particle’s lower flow resistance.

The excellent uniform manufacturing of Shim-pack XR columns is validated by three quality assurance certificates. The certificates authenticate physical properties, chromatographic performance, and packing condition by column.
