The Scientists’ Choice Awards Launches New European Awards at analytica 2018

SelectScience® is delighted to announce the winners of two new editorial awards at analytica 2018. Following the success of the awards in the USA at Pittcon 2018, the editorial team at SelectScience chose to focus on European excellence during the 2018 Scientists’ Choice Awards^®, with winners and nominees being celebrated last night during the awards party in Munich, Germany. Read on to find out who walked away with the coveted awards this year and for other highlights from this exciting event, which also marked 20 years of independent, innovative publishing and shared successes at SelectScience.

European Video of the Year - in association with The Scientists' Channel

In the brand new European Video of the Year category, the winning production features Dr. Marco Guerrini, Vice Director of the Ronzoni Institute, Italy, and was produced in partnership with Bruker BioSpin. The video highlights how the composition and quality control of heparin, a commonly used anticoagulant in surgeries, can be quantified by the use of 2D NMR techniques. Dr. Guerrini was unable to attend the ceremony, but kindly sent this message: "Me and my research group at Ronzoni Institute in Milan are enthusiastic about the magnificent work done by Anita (SelectScience Life Sciences Associate Editor) and her team in this video and honored to receive this award. It was a great opportunity for us to show the potential of NMR spectroscopy to determine the qualitative and quantitative assessment of heparin as well as other complex drugs." Watch the award-winning video >>

European Email of the Year

The brand new European Email of the Year was awarded to Phenomenex Inc. for its insightful email highlighting HPLC and UHPLC webinars. The two webinars were a hit with SelectScience readers around the world, providing useful tips to optimize the mobile phase of UHPLC methods and solutions for small particle solutions. Other recent winners in General Lab, Spectroscopy and Separations categories were highlighted once again, with the awards for customer service and company of the year also celebrating international success.

Best New Separations and Spectroscopy Products of 2017

Best new separations product went to Agilent Technologies for the 1260 Infinity II Prime LC System, and best new spectroscopy product of 2017 was also awarded to Agilent for its Ultivo Triple Quad LC/MS platform.

Reviewers' Choice Award for Best Analytical Science Product of 2017

The VanGuard Column Protection Products by Waters were named best analytical science product of 2017.

Reviewers' Choice Award for Best Company of 2017

The coveted award for best company of 2017 went to Thermo Fisher Scientific.

Reviewers' Choice Award for Best Customer Service of 2017

Recognized by scientists worldwide, Eppendorf won the Reviewers' Choice Award for best customer service, for the second year running.

Best Analytical Article of 2017

The Scientists' Choice Award for Best Analytical Science Article went to 'Could Correlative Microscopy Solve the Energy Problems of the Future?', an in-depth article featuring Dr. Timo Bernthaler, materials scientist at IMFAA, Germany. In the interview Bernthaler discusses his characterization work on energy storage, magnetic and 3D printed materials and how correlative microscopy from ZEISS is accelerating his research.

Dr. Bernthaler was unable to attend the cermony but told us: “It is with great pleasure that I accept this award and honor on behalf of our research team at the Materials Research Institute (IMFAA) at Aalen University, Germany. It was a pleasure to enhance research into materials for energy conversion, additive processing and energy storage by using correlative microscopic approaches and to explain the relevance of this important research.

"My thanks are also going to Sonia Nicolas and Sarah Thomas from SelectScience, for their professional assistance in producing the interview and the outstanding article. Of course, I would finally like to thank some important members of the IMFAA, Tim Schubert, Andreas Kopp, Andreas Jansche and Gerhard Schneider, for their support and vision to push microscopy into new materials and relevant technologies.”

Best Analytical Science Webinar of 2017

Bruker made it a double award win, picking up the title for best analytical webinar of 2017 for 'Nuclear Magnetic Resonance (NMR) is a Quantitative Method'. In the webinar, presenter Dr. Clemens Anklin, explores how NMR can be used to quantify a material, discussing the key parameters and experimental conditions that need to be controlled for accurate results, as well as the advantages and pitfalls of quantitative NMR.
