Waters Corporation Introduces New Columns for UltraPerformance LC and HPLC
15 Nov 2006Waters Corporation introduced today a new column for use with the Waters® ACQUITY UltraPerformance LC® (UPLC™) instrument platform.
The ACQUITY UPLC HSS T3 columns feature new high-strength 1.8µm silica particles designed specifically for UPLC applications. The first bonded phase to be introduced, T3, is aimed at separating small, water-soluble, polar organic molecules via reversed phase UPLC technology in pharmaceutical and fine chemical applications. At the same time, Waters is introducing the Atlantis® T3 HPLC Columns also designed for retaining polar compounds but by reversed-phase HPLC. Both products are now available for shipment.
ACQUITY UPLC HSS T3 Columns for UPLC Separations
Waters created this new 1.8 µm High Strength Silica (HSS) particle to be the first and only 100% silica particle designed specifically for 15000 psi/1000 bar applications. The first chemistry in this new family of UPLC columns is the ACQUITY UPLC HSS T3 chemistry which offers excellent retention of polar compounds while providing scientists using UPLC technology an additional selectivity choice. ACQUITY UPLC HSS T3 columns are currently available in 2.1 mm ID columns with lengths of 50 mm and 100 mm; additional configurations will be added during the fourth quarter of 2006 to mimic the current column offerings of the present ACQUITY UPLC BEH Technology™ column family which includes columns with C18, C8, Shield RP 18, phenyl, and HILIC chemistries all of which are designed for use with the Waters ACQUITY UPLC systems. These HSS and BEH column products are among the most technologically advanced columns ever created.

Atlantis T3 Columns for HPLC Separations
Like ACQUITY UPLC HSS T3 columns, the new Atlantis T3 HPLC columns feature T3 bonding technology, the product of over 30 years of bonded phase research at Waters. T3 bonding combines longer column lifetimes at low pH and improved peak shape for amine-containing bases at pH 7 with superior polar compound retention and 100% aqueous compatibility.
Additional benefits of the T3 bonding chemistry include improved column stability and performance at pH 7, and ultra-low MS bleed. Even though the ACQUITY UPLC HSS T3 columns and Atlantis T3 HPLC columns are built on different particle substrates, methods can be moved from HPLC to UPLC since both LC columns utilize the same T3 bonding and endcapping process. Atlantis T3 HPLC columns are available in 3, 5 and 10 micron particle sizes in various lengths and dimensions.
