Measuring melt viscosity of polymers
The CAP 2000+ has been a useful addition to our lab's tools for polymer characterization. It replaced our melt flow instrument as the primary tool for characterizing a polymer's viscosity at high temperatures (we typically measure viscosity in the 150-200C range). Pros: Very little sample required, fast turnaround and minimal cleanup compared to other methods. Heats and equilibrates very quickly (ours goes from room temp to a stable 150C in less than 15 minutes). Good reproducibility (given good training and good measurement parameters). Cons: A bit tricky / takes practice to apply the correct amount of sample in the correct spot on the plate, Establishing appropriate parameters that give consistent results can be difficult for some samples.
