Inventory management and electronic method/buffer procedures
eLAB is easy to use and has been, for the most part, customizable for our company. I appreciate their willingness and effort towards our small business to make eLab useful to us. The cloud-based system is great as lab members can track their samples from their benchtops without having to go back to their desks. I appreciate responses to my help desk inquiries, but often the response is, "it'll be in the next update", but there is no exact date given. I like that I can print sample labels from the software, but it was a bit tedious to set up and not as user friendly as I had expected. Setting up the sample types and storage units was easy. I wish the procedures/buffer and solutions pages worked like Excel.

Lab notebook and inventory software
The software is excellent for tracking experiments and inventory. It has a multitude of capabilities, but is lacking in key areas of particular interest to me. I wish the folder structure could expand beyond 3 levels to better group my experiments for my workgroup. We use it for tissue culture and large batches of samples are easy to generate. The difficulty is in tracking parent/child relationships and large batches of samples. Customer service has been excellent with response time and desire to assist in resolving issues. Most of my interactions have led to eLabNext acknowledging my issue and saying they will determine if my desired functionality is worth pursuing for development. I feel this is great software for starter labs or labs new to electronic documentation.

Biomarker discovery in environmental health studies
We find eLabJournal to be a key component of the daily activities in our research lab. It allows us to be organized at different levels, from sample inventory, referencing protocols, annotating experiments, organizing data, among others.

Materials science and chemistry in the energy sector
Very nice product that quickly becomes a must for any activity dealing with a lot of testing of specimens/samples and test data generation. Collaboration is seamless. More development is required on the mobile app but it's already pretty useful.

Record laboratory notes
There are some display issues with the notebook (e.g. PDFs and excel sheets are not well displayed). As well, there is a lack of complete mac support. The protocol templates are nice.

Standards, chemicals, inventory for equine drug testing
We "tweaked" the system for our inventory and ordering needs. The system is more useful for tracking our inventory of standards on hand.

Electronic laboratory notebook
We expected that the option of having Excel directly in the journal module would a game-changer for us and it fell short of that. It seemed very clunky and ended up being difficult to convince the team to use the internal module, and instead most of us found it easier to bulk upload our excel files which limited the ability to search through the documents. We felt that there had been no upgrades or improvements to the journal. When we signed up, we made it clear that an important feature for us would be the visualization of DNA sequences with the ability to design primers and constructs within the module and have all of that information tied to a project. There seemed to be some motivation on Bio-I-tech’s side to implement these sort of features in the future based on lots of companies feedback. After several months, it was very clear to us that this notebook program was not going to focus on molecular biology much because the clientele that use this product come from a diversity of industrial and academic backgrounds.

Electronic lab journal and inventory system
I evaluated 5 other electronic lab notebooks in addition to eLabNext's. It is by far the best in my opinion. It's important to know that I have many years of experience working in labs with elab notebooks. As such, our newer lab members found this a bit difficult to start with. I've used home-brew via Excel, SAP, and FileMaker Pro in other labs as well. This has a ton of functionality that makes it clear that scientists were involved in the design. You can import any documents, and even select specific pages from documents to add if the whole document is not relevant. It is ISO certified so everything is dated/timed and states the changes made and who made them. The inventory system is completely customizable to literally any cold storage system you may have. You can create your own storage container sizes. If you have formulas and calculations in excel they easily copy and paste in. I found that other elab notebooks lost the formulas in pasting. I also found the other notebooks we tried to be more of a glorified Word/Excel homebrew with a similar price tag to this system. Another important note is that protocols can be saved to add into an experiment, any changes made in the experimental protocol will not change the original. One more nice-to-have that's included, is the option to post protocols to share with the entire scientific community. Lastly, they currently have an option to add a section to write on with an e-pen. I hear they are currently working to make the notebook e-pen friendly overall. They've also mentioned that they can customize add-ons for functionality that we would like. Overall, it is much better.

eLabWebEdit
Integrate any software tool you use in your ELN
For a seamless integration of viewing or editing files linked in your electronic lab notebook (ELN), you can install the eLabJournal add-on eLabWebEdit.
eLabWebedit automatically downloads the file to your computer and opens the program associated with it. When you are finished, you can save the file, and eLabWebEdit will upload it back to the experiment that the file is associated with within the ELN.
In eLabJournal, the file will be stored as a new file version thereby maintaining data integrity according to GLP compliance. You can now focus on your work instead of making sure you have the correct version of the file saved.
