Our productivity has significantly increased since using FlowCam

Average Rating 4.0

Application Area:

Algae Classification

Using the FlowCam has increased our productivity three-fold in the last few years compared to using our microscope. There have been questions from our operations about the old microscopy cell counts versus those from FlowCam, so any information regarding comparisons could be helpful.

We use FlowCam to classify and quantify algae and it has made operations more efficient.

Average Rating 5.0

Application Area:

Algae classification and quantification.

FlowCam has been an incredible resource for our lab. We have been able to quantify and classify algae much faster than when we used a microscope. This quick turn-around time has been beneficial for our treatment facilities, and it has been a great tool for trending data. There was a little bit of a learning curve in the beginning (around 7 years ago), but since then, we've gotten a pretty good grasp on what context settings work best with what we are monitoring for. Because we have had FlowCam for a while, we've worked with multiple Visual Spreadsheets, and each one has been an improvement. We like using Visual Spreadsheet 4 and 5 simultaneously--one to analyze samples, and the other to classify while another sample is running. Overall, I really enjoy using this instrument and am always so eager and interested in learning new things about FlowCam and how we can constantly make operations more efficient.

All around great product. User-friendly/intuitive software (and hardware) that is capable of a plethora of complex tasks

Average Rating 4.0

Application Area:

Algae Quantification/Qualification

Very intuitive and easy to use once trained on. The application itself seems to be very effective and innovative for the time, and it still holds up years later. I am relatively new to my current position, and was able to learn the ins and outs of FlowCam relatively quickly. Customer support, from what I've gathered from my coworkers, is also top tier- with quick and hospitable help whenever we need it. One drawback, however, (which I assume is a problem with many other brands/flow cytometers on the market) is clogging in the cell itself. Of course this will happen time to time, however the method of unclogging it is not as efficient as I would have hoped/liked. All around, though, fantastic product and it surpasses all that is expected of it to perform our jobs efficiently.

Changed the way we do research with powerful easy to use technology

Average Rating 5.0

Application Area:

Shellfish Larval research

This instrument has changed the way I work and has greatly increased my productivity in shellfish egg, embryo, and larval research. Much more data and images can be used from this instrument and software that can be obtained with manual microscopy. This is a breakthrough product.

It saves my eyeballs!

Average Rating 5.0

Application Area:

Marine pelagic HABs and Cyanobacteria

The FlowCam has saved our eyes from counting large studies by light microscopy. I have had success using it for counting monocultures of dinoflagellates and cyanobacteria. I also used it for a study involving spherical microplastics. I wouldn't call myself an expert yet, but analysis by VisualSpreadsheet has been straight-forward to learn and to train for basic particle analysis.

Overall, I love the FlowCam, it has brought so many amazing things to my research program. Software needs updating.

Average Rating 3.0

Application Area:

Phytoplankton Ecology

I really love the FlowCam in terms of the easy of use of the instrument. Having been a long time user, the newest version of the FlowCam works well for my applications (and I don't break the flow cell every time I screw it into the holder). I will say the software is still very clunky. I think that FlowCam needs to embrace AI or other machine learning tools to help make the classification/library process easier. Similarly, there needs to be an easier way to get all the images, individually off the FlowCam in order to input into other tools for processing such as R or python. Also, it is a little disheartening to having to pay for software upgrades each time a new version comes out. Most of us have spent a ton of money on this instrument, and then to have to pay additional is hard. Similarly, some of the replacement pieces can be found online MUCH cheaper then purchased through Fluid Imaging. I get it, you have to make some money, but in the academic world we are on such tight budgets (even more these days) that the discrepancy feels a wrong. Overall, I love the FlowCam, it has allowed me to build collaborations in directions I wouldn't have ever imagined. However, the data processing side is hard, and at times it feels like I cannot get the raw data back out of the instrument, and that should never be.

An asset for increasing research efficiency. One small suggestion for VS6 UI

Average Rating 4.0

Application Area:

Marine Molecular Microbiology: Algae

The FlowCam 8000 drastically cuts down on the time needed to perform cell counts, and provides an easy way to process data and images after running plates. In our optimization, it has shown to be less variable than traditional microscopy methods. This instrument has been a good investment for the campus and a valuable asset for our research, despite its care being highly specialized at times. The few drawbacks would be some things involving the Visual Spreadsheets 6. It can be painstaking to go through and select a large amount of certain runs by hand for import, export, or deletion. Maybe provide an option that allows the user to hold shift and drag the mouse to select a large amount of runs?

Makes my job 10x easier and enjoyable

Average Rating 4.7

Application Area:

Analyze Phytoplankton

I absolutely love working with this instrument, it is a dream. the capabilities are endless, I use it to process daily water samples and it has cut the analysing time in 1/2 if not by more, plus the fact you can store all the old data runs and look back on them whenever you please. It is an expensive instrument but in my eyes it is well worth the money.

Great results, must have equipment in aquatic ecology lab

Average Rating 5.0

Application Area:

Aquatic ecology

The FlowCam is very effective for quick and reliable estimate of number of phytoplankton particles both in natural and laboratory samples. Great device to study zooplankton grazing as it is possible to estimate the amount of particles consumed and size range (selective feeding). It is preferably to use FlowCam with laser to measure phytoplankton as fluorescence helps to distinguish between algae and debris particles. I am using one of first FlowCams (2007 year of production). It is still reliable. Recently I had a n experience to use FlowCam8000 (2020 year of production). Great progress in usability. Now it is even more user friendly and efficient (new camera, new flow cells).

Couldn't do my job without this instrument!

Average Rating 4.7

Application Area:

Analyze Phytoplankton

Absolutely love the FlowCam for phytoplankton monitoring - much faster than using a traditional microscope for counting, etc. Also means that every daily flow run can be saved which means you can go back to old runs from past years/months etc. Very easy to use the machine - would recommend using the FlowCam university which helps you understand how to use the instrument/tips for analysis.
