Human HeLa-contaminated Carcinoma cell line
Organism: Homo sapiens (human)
Tissue: Cervix (Oriniginally: Larynx)
Morphology: Epithelial
Celltype: Carcinoma
Growth Properties: Monolayer, adherent
Description: The HEp-2 cell line has been described by Toolan (1954) as originatinating from tumours which were generated in irradiated and cortisone-treated rats by injecting small pieces of epidermoid carcinoma tissue isolated from the larynx of a 56 year old male. However, STR profiling has revealed that the HEp-2 cells are contaminated with HeLa cells. The cells are positive for keratin by immunoperoxidase staining.
