Environmental
We currently test high matrix, high salinity produced water samples from unconventional oil and gas extraction processes. Shimadzu’s ICPE 9000 instrument functions very well, but the database could be improved. Advantages: The quick analysis time allows for high throughput of the samples. The software is very user-friendly. Disadvantages: There does not seem to be a quick way to “group” samples to their calibration curve when using standard addition so that multiple samples can be run in one batch. Also, the only way to access raw data is through ASCII or copying it into Excel. Sequel or a comparable database would be preferred to allow for more capabilities to analyze data and trends, or correlating data other sample information.

Groundwater
This ICP-OES has worked well for the past 5 years in a core lab with various users and experience levels. We perform groundwater analysis with a couple student users. The hardware options are diverse enough to have nebulizers available for our groundwater at various flow rates and those more suited for organic matrices. The flexibility of axial or radial emission monitoring expands the range of concentrations we can measure. Software wizards monitor possible interferences and suggest optimum wavelengths based upon matrix and other analytes present. Operation has been fairly easy for students to understand. The 4 stars for "After Sales Care" is due to the fact that since this is more of a specialty instrument, Shimadzu does not have a service staff or part inventory as large as their chromatography or MS market. That being said, it may be quite competitive in the ICP world.
