Dye dilution analysis requires extremely bright fluorescent dyes, which is supplied by the Cell Trace Blue dye. Using this dye, five generations can be visualized. The reliable and homogeneous staining among cells in the population allows for visualization of distinct generations without the use of complex modeling software.

The CellTrace Blue dye easily crosses the plasma membrane and covalently binds inside cells, providing a consistent signal, even after several days in a cell culture environment. The dye shows little cytotoxicity. The UV excitation (355 nm or 375 nm) and narrow emission of CellTrace Blue dye make it ideal for multiplexing as it lies outside the spectral emission profiles of most other dyes and fluorescent proteins.
