Lumin Purge and Trap Concentrator

Teledyne LabsAvailable: Worldwide

Tekmar's Lumin Purge and Trap Concentrator (PTC) is a sample preparation instrument used to remove Volatile Organic Compounds (VOCs) out of aqueous and solid sample types using Helium or Nitrogen. The VOCs are deposited onto a sorbent trap which is then heated to release the VOCs into a Gas Chromatograph (GC) system. This technique is standard for many EPA Methodologies as well as analytical options where concentration of V…

Very reliable, good results!

Average Rating 3.7

Application Area:

Environmental Analysis

For a relatively new user this system is easy to use and reliable. Maintenance is minimal, which allows for continuous uninterrupted run time. My laboratory values efficiency, and this system allow us to run water sample without delay. It is a solid addition to any environmental laboratory.

Reliable and robust instrument

Average Rating 5.0

Application Area:

Environmental

It has been in operation at our lab for environmental - VOC/Dioxane analysis for the past 2+ years. The instrument is found to be very reliable with a little maintenance. The throughput time is really good. The software makes it easy to run different methods in the same sequence.

Problematic start, but robust post warranty service.

Average Rating 4.7

Application Area:

Environmental EPA methodology 5025, 624, 8260B

I have the pleasure to be using a first-generation Lumin from Teledyne, Tekmar. It had an issue post-install, but luckily it was resolved within the warranty period. The initial mass flow controller quit working correctly, but the warranty replacement has been sturdy thus far. I haven't had to change traps during 3 years of operation. The programming of the sample purge cycles (methods) is very simple and intuitive. I highly recommend this instrument since the initial problem was resolved. The software is robust and requires reboots very infrequently. The trap and purging glassware are easily exchangeable and not hard to service. The Lumin reliably starts a 7890B/5977B Inert GCMS system from Agilent on time. The GC's bake cycle is finished around the dry purge time of the trap. Not much wasted time is had between runs.

Environmental

Software is easy enough to use for a new user. I keep on having a MFC controller issue even after upgrading firmware. Ability to run water samples for GCMS is necessary to my applications.

Application Area:

Analyzing volatile analytes in environmental samples

Stable results, good layout making the maintenance of the unit and access to the commonly changed pieces (trap, etc.) much easier and less cramped than other models.

This technique is standard for many EPA Methodologies as well as analytical options where concentration of VOCs is required. Tekmar has been the leader in this technology since its first PTC was released in the 1980s. Tekmar has continued to improve on this technique through eight generations of systems including the Lumin PTC to meet the ever increasing analytical challenges faced by laboratories.
