Whitley A45 Workstation
Anaerobic workstation with three ports and a 12 litre airlock
Incubation of anaerobic plating and inoculation of anaerobic broths
An impressive instrument, maintains and monitors temperature, humidity and anaerobic conditions extremely well. I often carry out plating of anaerobic cultures, using the cabinet allows me to deoxygenate plates before use and then incubate in a temperature controlled environment that surrounds the plates with the required anaerobic atmosphere. Using a workstation over gas jars gives the added benefit of an increased availability of space (jars are bulky to store in incubators) and the option of checking/counting plates part way through the incubation time without exposing them to normal atmosphere - something you can't do with jars. The workstation also offers the ability to inoculate anaerobic broths using normal pipetting and eliminating the need to use needles and bungs (thus removing that risk of injury) - speeding the job up and making it safer to. Broths can then be incubated normally with the anaerobic conditions remaining intact. The cabinet is very easy to use via the port holes, with a side chamber for transferring items in and out whilst minimally impacting the anaerobic internally. The cabinet also has excellent monitoring systems, constantly recording readings for temperature and oxygen levels in addition to catalyst performance and where necessary alarming to notify of excursions. This information can be downloaded (at least monthly) to record these readings, which is useful to tie in with records associated with testing or projects. The newer cabinets offer additional configurations where there are instant access portholes, letterbox access points for putting single small items in to different types of access portholes where larger quantities of items can be placed inside or removed without using the transfer chamber. This instrument has made my job easier and offered benefits in use that jars never could.

Culturing anaerobic organisms
The A45 workstation works incredibly well. The sleeveless portholes allow for rapid use and the overall workstation space allows for incubation of nearly 1000 petri dishes. Anaerobic growth has never been impaired since we have used the equipment. The Don Whitley Scientific after sales care and the service are superior to any other science equipment service.

Growth of anaerobic cultures in hospital Microbiology laboratory
The A45 workstation provides a large easy to use work space for anaerobic cultures. The airlock systems allow multiple racks to enter the cabinet at the same time with easy access for the user via portholes on the front of the cabinet. A letterbox style opening is also provided for quickly inserting single plates without having to run a full airlock cycle. The ability to get multiple racks into and out of the cabinet in a single airlock cycles reduces the amount of times needed to enter the cabinet to maintain the best possible anaerobic conditions. A large touch screen is built into the station and provides live temperature and anaerobic condition monitoring, the data is downloadable via a USB port for full traceability and QC. The after sales support has been excellent, friendly staff and engineers are always available to answer any questions or troubleshooting issues.

Growth of anaerobic microbes
We found the use and maintenance of this anaerobic cabinet extremely simple. We have the optional removable front and gloveless arm holes, so it's very simple to access. We grow anaerobic gut microbes and have fitted a small plate reader to allow high throughput growths, as well as growing litres of culture for protein purifications. The Don Whitley team were great at repeat visits to ensure all cabling and fittings were working. Engineers very easy to contact by phone if necessary.

The Whitley A45 Workstation is the first in the range to have three ports. Complete with built-in rapid airlock and an intuitive, colour touch-screen control panel, this new workstation allows you to work completely glove and sleeve free due to the instant access porthole system. The A45 will accommodate between 700 and 900 x 90mm Petri dishes depending on whether you use plate carriers and which accessories and system options have been incorporated.
Sample manipulation within a secure anaerobic environment is now as easy as working aerobically at the laboratory bench.
The A45 Features
• Instant access porthole system - saving you eight times less gas when entering the workstation than with conventional porthole systems
• A 12-liter airlock that can be flushed with nitrogen as an additional money saving option
• An interactive, colour, touch-screen that displays your set parameters and has password protected levels
• Automatic de-humidity control system with no user maintenance necessary
• Dual gas operation
• Automatic commissioning cycle
A45 Options Include
• Single plate entry system
• Data logging capability
• Removable front - to facilitate the bulk transfer of samples/equipment or thorough cleaning
• Internal electrical socket
• Custom-designed trolley
With a relatively small footprint there is still a large incubation capacity and the ability to better organize your work within an anaerobic environment.
