The Orbitrap is an ion trap mass analyzer that consists of two outer electrodes and a central electrode, which enable it to act as both an analyzer and detector. With a QTOF you are already in a range of mass accuracy of about 1-2 ppm and a resolution R = 30000 to 50000. Orbitraps have a mass accuracy in the sub-ppm range and are even better in resolution. Unlike in ion traps and QMFs that require a voltage ramp to detect different m/z's sequentially, in the Orbitrap all m/z's are detected simultaneously. Within the Orbitrap the frequency of ion oscillation in the time domain is measured, with all m/z species measured simultaneously Enabled to detect thousands of semi volatile and non-volatile, high-molecular-weight bio-oil compounds and provided partial information about their structure.

The instrumental effectiveness has been shown quite well during the past years’ practical application and test work. The satisfactory analytical results’ reproducibility has also been achieved most of the time. The instrument is relatively easy to control even for beginners and it’s a good choice in terms of performance/cost ratio and maintenance service as well.

This is my first MS instrument and I really liked it. This instrument is so robust and easy to work with. I have used it for hydrogen/deuterium exchange and hydroxyl radical foot-printing experiments. It gives reprodicible results with good signal and minimum sample requirement.
