Good, basic pipetting robot

Average Rating 4.0

Application Area:

Broth microdilution

The protocols were relatively easy to run, though often a restart was needed each time a protocol was changed or re-run. Creating newprotocols was quite simple too. Even after calibration, the pipetting was unfortunately not accurate enough to use for our intended use.

Perfect to save your time for standard pipetting tasks

Average Rating 4.0

Application Area:

Automating pipetting protocols for cell culture experiments.

The price performance ratio is great! It is a simple and comparably cheap liquid handler which is capable of using two different pipette heads at a time. Pipetting volumes range from 20uL to 1000uL with single- or multi-channel heads. Multi-channel means it has 8 pipettes which cannot move independently. The programming is easy if you are already familiar with python. I think they also provide a non-programmer interface in which you can build your protocol. The support is usually targeting you to the guides that are available online, so rarely helpful cause I've read them already multiple times. However, the responding time is usually very fast. Currently, the company is releasing the next model of the robot, called Opentrons FLEX, which has even more functionality like automated calibrating. I think this is also the reason why the software maintenance of the old models got left behind a bit. I would be really careful with upgrading the server versions, cause the latest versions are sometimes buggy or are missing functions that were available beforehand. The server versions 4.7 to 6.0 are working quiet stable in my opinion.

Great benchtop workhorse

Average Rating 4.7

Application Area:

Sample reformatting and cell plating

Extremely easy to use and you can't beat the price. I wish it had a 96 channel head or a gripper so we could expand to a bit higher throughput applications, but overall is a workhorse and does exactly what we need.

Excellent and cheap and easy to operate liquid handler great for various applications

Average Rating 5.0

Application Area:

We are using the OT-2 mainly for NGS Library preparation, library quantification and nucleic acid ex

The OT-2 has been a great addition to our lab with extremely low capital expense. Easy to use by scientists and techs with limited/ none automation experience and to set up a variety of liquid handling tasks. Really recommend this to any lab new to automation and who like a product with minimum requirements for flawless operation.

Excellent value but does require a bit of skill with Python.

Average Rating 4.7

Application Area:

ddPCR, NGS library prep

I have been very happy with the robot. I found it does take some Python knowledge to use. The Opentrons protocol designer is horrible. I wrote my own code to read a template file and build all the steps needed. There was a point where they were going through rapid updates to both the api and the backend but that is mostly done. For us the robot is excellent value for the money.

Great value for money and user friendly.

Average Rating 5.0

Application Area:

Sample prep in a protein oriented omics groups

Easy to set up and run. Had it running within an hour of unboxing. Protocol writing is a bit time consuming, but easy to work with. Both the protocol designer and the Python API, with only absolute minimum coding experience.

The low price is not worth the headache and lack of tech support.

Average Rating 2.3

Application Area:

DNA and protein purification

We bought the robot and since day 1 it has been nothing but a headache. The tech support is not a unified team - the app development guys don't talk to hardware guys and the customer support does not know what the sales guys agreed on. The calibration and setup is a huge mess. The lack of reliable follow-up customer/tech support is a deal breaker and we will return the instrument. It is good value, but not worth the headache and lost time.

The OT-2 is a steal.

Application Area:

Liquid handling on genome sensor

$5000 for a complete liquid handling solution with open-source programming and clean APIs is an absolute steal.

Affordable, customizable, reliable.

Average Rating 4.3

Application Area:

Liquid handling

Pros: Affordable, customizable, reliable. Cons: Requires some sort of programming skills with python for creating scripts.

Review Date: 28 Jan 2020 | Opentrons

The $4000 Opentrons OT-2 liquid handling robot was designed specifically for high-throughput life science labs that haven't historically considered automation, which can cost 5-20x more than the baseline OT-2. Opentrons is vertically integrated, meaning design, production, service and sales don't rely on 3rd parties or bloated bureaucracies that inflate costs at long-established organizations. Opentrons also focuses on ease of use, open-source hardware/software, and web-based support, all of which allow for a more modern, seamless experience with liquid handling automation, while allowing further savings to be passed to your lab.
