Quick-DNA™ Fungal/Bacterial Microprep Kit

We used this kit in a trial of extraction methods for microbiome swabs from aquatic invertebrates. While it didn't always yield the most DNA compared to competitors, it did yield the most amplifiable DNA. If your plan is to do metabarcoding / microbiome research, I definitely recommend this kit. It yields clean and easy to work with DNA.

The test we had done was very straightforward and the result was either a yes or no to the specific strain of bacteria. Turnaround time was quick. The help we received leading up to the test was great! The further testing we needed is not able to be done at Zymo so someone was helpful to discuss what my options were and the scope of their reach.

I have used this product to extract small amounts of fungal pathogens from plant tissues - mostly botrytis and powdery mildews. Simply pressing Scotch tape to the sporulating fungi, then folding up the tape and adding it to the included bead beating tubes, works very well for this application. With the OMNI bead disruptor I use, there is no need to disrupt for 5 minutes on high - I usually do 1 min on level 5. I've also extracted a variety of culturable endophytes from broths or by adding a glob scraped off a plate. Always surprised by how quick and easy this protocol is. Under an hour extraction, even with lots of samples. I have never had problems with downstream applications (PCR, qPCR, cloning, sequencing). Yields are good for both these types of samples, but I would prefer a slightly higher volume than the 20ul this kit yields without sacrificing on concentration. I'll have to try the miniprep. Recommended.
