It took a lot of tuning, but now it sequences full-length immune repertoires.
Immune repertoire sequencing
I purchased an Ion Torrent PGM for immune repertoire sequencing. The application was not supported, but I was attracted to the PGM platform because it was the only one at the time offering reads longer than 400 bases. A couple of years later Ion developed 500 base chemistry. The whole process is much faster than Illumina, although the throughput is lower. There is no need to put pair mates together and the read quality is not bad. It took a long time to adapt the existing protocols for immune repertoire sequencing, but the results were pretty good.

Genome sequencing, transcriptome sequencing and metagenomics
Yes, I would recommend this instrument for the labs working on genomics, transcriptomics and metagenomics. The work flow is easy and hardly requires any expertise for its running. I got higher output for genome sequencing than claimed by the company. The sequencing time is also less.
