Good machine that doesn't meet it's potential. Needs software improvements.

Average Rating 3.0

Application Area:

Paint and coatings analysis

Software allows for easy method setup. Great for operators with little XRF set up experience. Machine has the potential to be useful for R&D labs rather than just QC. Unfortunately the software becomes cumbersome with a lot of methods as you can't subdivide your methods into folders. Disappointing that they thought to make method setup fast and simple but didn't make accommodations for juggling a large number of methods. Malvern Panalytical really needs to rethink this if they want to sell to more R&D labs to replace their ICP's. Service response time is very slow. They said they're adding more service people so I am hoping that improves. So far they pale in comparison to other manufacturer that I worked with for many years. Even purchasing consumables from them has been slow and problematic. The PANalytical and Malvern merger doesn't seem to have gone well. After three years I think they might be getting back on track, but it's been tough sledding. This is a high end machine and innards look to be better built than others. There was a lot of issues with mapping function at first, but it's better now. I thought I'd find having the ED core in addition to WD more useful than I have to date. Very rare to do elemental mapping and not have a good idea ahead of time on what elements to focus on. Would have been better off with typical WD elemental mapping for more sensitivity for light elements. I over rated the value of having both WD and ED core.

Manufacturer's Response

Dear Ken, Thank you for your feedback. We are happy to hear you find our software easy to use for less experienced operators and value your suggestion to introduce folders to manage large amount of applications. We are committed to deliver top quality services and we are redesigning our field deployment model to provide the correct solutions to solve customer problems more expeditiously. Our local organization will reach out to you to discuss the progress and plan going forward. Elemental mapping can be used in various ways. Although for larger bulk analysis WD will indeed have a better light element performance, we would be happy to discuss how ED small spot elemental mapping will actually outperform WD. Best regards, Malvern Panalytical

Zetium Ultimate

Average Rating 4.0

Application Area:

Mining - Smelter process control

The Zetium Ultimate by Malvern Panalytical is a top of the line X-ray instrument that produces very fast and accurate results. Once calibrated, the instrument is very user-friendly and training numerous operators to carry out process analyses on a 24/7 basis has been very straightforward. Although we experienced a number of commissioning bugs (early production unit) and a tube stability issue, Panalytical continued to work with us, stepped up to ensure these issues were resolved and made things right. At times, over the past few years, there didn't seem to be enough Service Engineers to go around but I have been assured that this is being addressed. I would recommend this instrument.

Manufacturer's Response

Thanks for your review and your assistance in helping us improve our instruments.

The Ultimate edition of the Zetium spectrometer represents the most advanced configuration in the Zetium family. The combination of WD and ED core and innovative technologies delivers analytical excellence in every situation, from R&D laboratories to high-throughput production facilities.

The Ultimate edition is pre-configured to deliver unrivaled sensitivity across the periodic table with thin-window, high-power tube technology, laterally curved crystals and unique detector technology, saving time and increasing sample throughput in busy laboratories.

The Ultimate edition also features Omnian, our market-leading standardless analysis module, for the qualitative and quantitative elemental analysis of unknown materials or materials where calibration samples are not readily available. In addition the inclusion of the SumXcore delivers significant advantages for conventional applications, such as reduced analytical times, identification of unexpected elements and spectrum archiving.

Addition of the small spot analysis and mapping option using the ED core allows practical, time-efficient data acquisition. The entire spectrum measured by the ED core at every spot significantly reduces measurement times and allows for standardless quantitative data capture.
