Gene Editing
I used the Zymo competent cells for my transformation experiments and they worked very well! Very easy to use, and preparation takes a very short amount of time. You don’t need to use complicated steps, just add the DNA, wait for a few seconds and you are ready to go! Zymo always makes sure that their products are very useful and easy to use. Efficient and economical resource for any molecular biology laboratory.
Recombinant DNA
Mix & Go! Competent Cells - DH5 Alpha are a great resource. Extremely economical particular when purchased in the 96 tube format. We have had great success with them, we routinely use them for recombination reactions as well as most routine cloning and molecular biology applications. The only potential drawback is that it can be very difficult to separate the tubes to simply use a single aliquot. We have resorted to using scissors to separate the tubes from one another.

Plasmid transformation
I chose this kit because it was regularly used by the people at Addgene.com. It is really easy to make and the transfection efficiency is higher than what I would get from the homemade competent cells. The feature that I like the most about this kit is that it takes less than 5 min to perform the whole transformation procedure (with ampicillin as a selection marker) instead of a regular 1.30 H!

Cloning recombinant DNA for sequencing
We use these cells as a part of our augmentation for sequencing. They are reliably competent, pun intended. The price is lower per unit and service with Zymo always makes re-ordering easier. We use cloning vectors from another company but will be experimenting with Zymo's vectors soon to see if we can just get the whole process done from one low reliable kit. Cells come in a big vat so defrosting over ice and refreezing in single use quantities is pretty easy. But still an extra step.
