The presence and control of water content in pharmaceutical products is very much essential in order to retain the physical and chemical stability of medicinal and food products. It also plays a crucial role in dictating the polymorphic stability of drugs substances and drug products. Hence, it is very important and critical to determine the exact levels of water in the pharmaceutical products. This requires very sophisticated and robust instrument to achieve this level of accuracy and reproducibility. In my experience, this is practically achieved with help of Metrohm KF instrument. The instrument is designed to test the amount of water content or % of moisture present in powders/Tablets/Ointments/capsules etc. The accuracy and the reproducibility of results are really awesome. The instrument is easily operated through a 21 CFR compliance software. The instrument is a medium compact in size and occupies very less laboratory space. The main parts of system include sensitive electrode/High accurate delivery burette/Software tools. The instrument has capability and sensitivity to measure as low as 0.1% level of water present in samples. The instrument works on a well-known theory of Bunsen equation to stoichiometrically calculate the water content present in samples being tested. This has very user-friendly features that enables users to easily work with and analyze samples in a more systematic and confident way. The system is automated for delivery of reagents/Detection of end point coupled with a compliance software tool. A provision is given for insertion of molecular sieves to arrest the entry of external moisture into reaction vessels.
