Evacuable Pellet Dies

Specac LtdGS03000

Specac manufactures a wide range of high-quality Evacuable Pellet Dies suitable compacting powdered samples into discs or briquettes. These are particularly well suited for the preparation of solid KBr pellets for FTIR molecular spectroscopic analysis and XRF pellets for X-Ray Fluorescence atomic spectroscopic analysis (as required by a number of USLP and ASTM methods), but also find use in a broad range of other applications.…

High quality and easy to clean

Average Rating 5.0

Application Area:

FTIR

The specac evacuable dye is very easy to use and clean. I use it to press KBr for FTIR analysis. It has been a year with no issue.

Disappointing product

Average Rating 3.0

Application Area:

KBr pellet making

1) Manual has mistakes in naming the parts in the specific assembly section for 5 mm evacuable die. 2) Manual does not have technical drawings. Selling mechanical parts like this without showing dimensions and tolerance at which each part is manufactured show total lack of engineering sense. 3) While following the specific assembly procedure, the stainless steel pellet got stucked into the cylinder body when using just hand insertion. The dimension of the pellet was measured to be 4.99 mm. Since the diameter in the cylinder body is 5 mm it is hard to imagine how to insert the pellets inside the cylinder. 4) Though the die is said to be made of 440C stainless steel, it get dents using less then maximum load.

Great pellet dies!

Average Rating 5.0

Application Area:

Preparation of KBr pellets for transmission FT-IR

The dies are very precisely made from high-quality materials, which are easy to maintain and clean. Very good quality for a very reasonable price. The assembly and disassembly are also very smooth.

I would purchase this product again.

Average Rating 3.7

Application Area:

Battery component characterization

The only issue I have with this product is that over a year or two of not too frequent use, the tolerance between the ram and the barrel loosens, creating uneven pellets.

Disappointing result for the price paid

Average Rating 1.7

Application Area:

FTIR and UV-Vis sample preparation

I bought 5 mm evacuable pellet die set that had the most inconvenient manual for sampling loading (Section 6 in the manual). The issue could be easily resolved by including a funnel to the set with appropriate size. Given the price of the equipment, it is possible to include a free funnel. After the first use, one of the stainless steel pellets were stuck inside the die cylinder body and could not be retrieved because the plunger (pushing rod) was not long enough. When I contacted Specac regarding the problem with retrieving the stainless steel pellet, I did not get any help and was ignored.

Great results

Average Rating 4.7

Application Area:

sample preparation for Neutron Activation Analysis

It is very effective for our application, we are very happy with this

Review Date: 11 Jul 2018 | Specac Ltd

Integral to our mineralogy setup.

Average Rating 4.0

Application Area:

Creating pellets of sample for FTIR database/indentification.

The product is easy to use and is used in conjunction with our presses, which pressurizes up to 12k psi. We have consistent, reproducible results and these die setups last years, so are a very good buy for their money.

All our works starts will a well made pellet and Specac gives us this every time.

Battery technology

Robust and easy to use. Gives reproducible high quality pellets. Ideal for teaching and research use

Good setting (although a bit cumbersome), but the core dies tend to become distorted

Average Rating 3.3

Application Area:

Preparing KBr pellets for FTIR

The two core dies are simply not hard enough (we use the 5 and 7 mm diameter ones). As a research academic lab, with many students using the instrument, we needed to order or make new ones several times, as they squash on one side and cannot fit in anymore. Now, we do not use them at all.

Specac manufactures a wide range of high-quality Evacuable Pellet Dies suitable compacting powdered samples into discs or briquettes. These are particularly well suited for the preparation of solid KBr pellets for FTIR molecular spectroscopic analysis and XRF pellets for X-Ray Fluorescence atomic spectroscopic analysis (as required by a number of USLP and ASTM methods), but also find use in a broad range of other applications. Atlas Series Evacuable Pellet Dies are typically used in conjunction with the Specac’s Atlas Series of Hydraulic Press Products.

These Evacuable Pellet Dies produce circular pellets in sizes from 5 mm to 40 mm diameter as standard, but other shapes and sizes are available on request. These pellet dies cover a range of load capabilities. For optimum quality and durability of the pellet die, all parts are manufactured from hardened stainless steel, and surfaces that come in contact with the sample are highly polished. Each Pellet Die comprises an evacuable base, body, plunger, set of pellets, extractor ring, and O Ring Kit. Both Standard Evacuable Pellet Dies are available, as well as a number of Lightweight Pellet Dies. Being lighter, the latter pellet dies are easier to handle in laboratory applications that require repeated pellet preparation.
